Chapter Ten
The silence across the mobile connection was ominous. Kellanâs heart pounded as he waited for Rory to reply to his announcement that he was having doubts about the restaurant opening. He gripped the balcony railing with his free hand and stared at the harbor, grasping for any sense of peace from the water.
Heâd certainly had peace last night on the boat with Sam. Seeing all kinds of stars, orgasmic and otherwise. Sam knew exactly what to do with his tongue on another manâs body.
A seagull landed on the nearest boardwalk lamppost, nearly at eye level with him, staring at him pointedly, as if to say Peace from the water? Look at you.
Something that Aoife would say, were she here. The expression on the face of the seagull was kind of like her, too. Sheâd promised sheâd find a way to keep in touch after death. Inhabiting a bird that loved stealing French fries and crapping on cars seemed her style.
He laughed.
âYou find this funny?â Rory snapped.
Good Christ, heâd drifted away from the conversation, which deserved his full concentration.
âRor, Iâm so sorry. I got to thinking about Aoife, and there was a seagull, andââ
His friend hummed sympathetically. âAt least your memories of her have you smiling.â
âSure.â He swallowed. âI didnât call to chat about my grief, though.â
âSomething tells me itâs intrinsically tied to you announcing that youâre doubting our business plan. The one weâve been busting our arses on for literal years.â
Oof. A rough truth, he knew. âIt might be.â
âHaving someone die, love, someone young... Itâs bound to get you asking questions. But it doesnât mean you need to throw away what mattered before their death. Aoife loved seeing you on the line, or heading out in your whites to accept all that praise. And sheâd get a thrill knowing that her money was a big part of getting a bunch of English folks to love somethingâto crave somethingâunapologetically Irish. Proving we can be upscale, too.â
He didnât doubt Rory was right. Sort of. âAoife would have adored that if she knew it was what had my heart on fire. And I just donât know it is.â
âWell, figure it out, wouldja? Your bloody self-discoveryâs been enough of a hit, having you gone for months. And now this...â
âI couldnât get the money without being gone.â
âAnd now youâre not sure you want to use it for our plan anyway.â
âRory...â
âWe might not share blood,â he said, âbut weâre still family. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the only quality family you have left.â
âAnd that wouldnât change. But I need more than just you, Steven and the kids.â One of the reasons theyâd decided to stay in London instead of opening a place in Dublin or Cork was Roryâs English husband. Rory had wanted their kids to be close to Stevenâs parents.
âYouâll bounce back, darling. Really. Weâll build our empire, and youâll get the chance to find someone special now that you wonât be at the hospital every night.â
âIâm starting to wonder if I could find someone special here.
